DIY Mobile Book Cart

book cart

Earlier this afternoon (Friday, June 12th, 2020) I realized I had a need for a mobile book cart: The kind of cart one sees in public libraries, used to return books to shelves. They are usually made out of metal, but I didn’t want to buy one and I figured I could make what I need with a bunch of scrap and re-purposed wood. I even had a set of 4 small casters the came off an old metal office cabinet I had saved.

No plans. I just ”winged it” and essentially designed the cart as I went along, based on the materials I found in the shop, and as I thought of features that would best suit my needs. It’s roughly a couple of feet long by a foot wide and about 3-1/2 feet tall.  The shelves for the books are tilted back about 15 degrees so the books won’t fall out while rolling the cart around.

You can easily replicate what I did, and you can use whatever dimensions you would like, based upon your own needs and materials on hand. I didn’t bother to paint or finish off this cart and I probably won’t in the future, either. I’m just going to use it as-is. In fact, I’ll be putting this cart right into service within the next few minutes!
