Apparently, the simple garden tool we used to refer to as a “sickle” or “garden sickle” years ago when I was a kid, is now referred to as “Grass Whip” (if you can find one anywhere). I’ve been looking all over the place locally and had no luck whatsoever. When trying to describe what I was looking for, all I got in return was a puzzled look. Seems like all the younger folks working in the local stores have never heard of or have seen such a tool.
My searches online yielded nothing and that included Amazon, initially. I tried Amazon again just recently and finally met with success! There were two Amazon sellers, both offering the same tool (now called a “grass whip”) from a Chinese manufacturer. Bothe displayed the same picture and specifications. The only difference was one seller wanted 50 bucks and the other offered the same tool for thirty bucks (I went with the $30 option).
This tool was quite common and very cheap years ago. Any store offering lawn and garden tools & supplies used to carry them. The Chinese made version you see in this video is different from the originals is that it has a steel handle rather than a wooden one which makes it a bit heavier. It also comes through the mail all disassembled, so there is “some assembly required.”
Here’s the video:
